It could be a still from a biopic movie. The actors taking a break from the shooting of "The Romanians, then and now".
In Rafael's timeless image we can breathe the air, and feel the foggy atmosphere. The protagonist has such a powerful presence that anesthetises everything and everybody around him. Including the viewer who stares at him staring at the void.
A void ... full of hopes, lost and new. A void so bright and impenetrable at the same time. The context (known to the undersigned) may have or not, an impact on the message transmitted by the image.
In any case, the aesthetic value of this rare street portrait goes far beyond any political journalism and stays with us, glued on our skin and with mixed feelings. Highly contradictory, like a bad dream, a father figure or even a nostalgic, melancholic, testimony of a fragmentary victory.
